Numbers: Lesson Guide

From shopping to giving out your phone number, counting in French is a foundational skill.

Language & Cultural Tips

The Quirky 70s, 80s, and 90s: In France, 70 is soixante-dix (60+10), 80 is quatre-vingts (4x20), and 90 is quatre-vingt-dix (4x20+10). Note: Some francophone countries like Belgium and Switzerland use septante, octante/huitante, nonante instead!

Punctuation Swaps: French uses a comma for decimals (1,5 means one and a half) and a space or period for thousands (1 000 or 1.000 means one thousand).
